Behavior Settings

Control back navigation, the step counter, and resuming a session.

Open the gear icon in the builder's top toolbar to change how respondents move through your form.

Back navigation

Lets respondents revisit previous questions using a back button. Turn it off for a quiz or anything where you don't want answers changed after the fact.

Step counter

Shows respondents how far through the form they are (e.g. "3 / 8"). On a branching form the total can't always be known in advance, so the counter shows the step reached so far without a fixed total.

Allow resume

On by default. A respondent who closes the tab or loses connection partway through can come back and pick up exactly where they left off, instead of starting over.

  • Same browser only - resume is stored on the respondent's device, so it only works if they return in the same browser they started in.
  • A prompt asks first - a returning respondent sees "Pick up where you left off?" with two options: Continue (restores their position) or Start again (begins the form over).
  • Position and progress restored - tapping Continue brings back the question they were on, their answers so far, and any running score.
  • Expiry matches the session window - set below as Keep progress for (7 days by default). The window is counted from the respondent's last visit or answer, not when they first started. After the window passes with no activity, a returning respondent starts fresh.
  • Republishing resets saved progress - if you publish changes to the form while someone has a saved position, they start over on their next visit rather than resuming into content that's changed underneath them.

Turn Allow resume off and returning respondents always start from the beginning - no resume prompt is ever shown.
