Why it reads naturally
Your eyes stay near the lens
Viewers notice broken eye contact at about 3 degrees of sideways offset, while looking about 2 degrees below the lens still reads as eye contact. So the script runs as one line just under your front camera.
The next few words stay bright
Studies of reading aloud find your eyes typically run 2 to 3 words ahead of your voice. The ticker keeps the next few words bright instead of chasing a single word.
Smooth scroll, not word by word
In a study of on-screen reading, people understood smoothly scrolling text at least as well as words flashed one at a time, and preferred it over every other format tested, including jumpier scrolling.
Natural pauses and pace
Breaks at natural phrase boundaries help readers group words the way they would say them: adults process text more easily when breaks match the phrasing, and young readers read aloud more fluently. So the ticker leaves a little extra space at commas and full stops. Pace follows Microsoft's presenter coaching, which recommends 100 to 165 words per minute; our slow, normal and fast speeds sit inside that range.
